SCALE · Making-of

Scale Gemini 3.6

This version was made with Gemini 3.6. It covers the same subject as Scale Opus 5 and SCALE ASTRA, from the observable universe to the Planck length, but instead of anchoring on Gwanghwamun in Seoul, it's built as a standalone space with 42 celestial bodies and objects placed in a single Three.js 3D coordinate system.

42 objects you can jump to by search

Type a name into 🔍 Search at the bottom of the screen (shortcut /) and you jump straight to any of the 42 objects between the observable universe and the Planck length: a blue whale, a tardigrade, a human body cell, an atomic nucleus, and so on. Press the 🎬 Cinematic Tour button for a documentary mode that sweeps through everything automatically.

A 1:1 two-way comparison lab

The standout feature is the "1:1 Two-Way Size Comparison Lab," which opens in its own modal. Pick any two objects, set them side by side and check the difference in scale. You can switch between a 3D perspective mode and a true-to-measurement 1:1 orthographic CAD mode.

Photographic textures, one file

The Earth, Sun and planet textures are real photographs applied as is (including Earth's cloud layer, night lights and specular map), and three.js r128 is loaded from a CDN (cdnjs, jsDelivr). It's a single HTML file with just a texture folder alongside, so it uses the same "deploy as one static file" approach as Scale and SCALE ASTRA.

This version, and the others

The same scale ladder also exists as Scale Opus 5, made with Claude Opus 5; SCALE ASTRA, made with GPT Astra; Scale Gemini 3.8, also made with Gemini but built as a card-style HUD; and Scale Odyssey Opus 5.5, made with Claude Opus 5.5. It's fun to put them side by side and see how each AI solves the same problem differently.
